Juno and the Paycock

1930·GB
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
DramaComedy
Early Hitchcock

Hitchcock's faithful adaptation of Seán O'Casey's beloved tragicomedy, set in the Dublin tenements during the Irish Civil War. "Captain" Boyle — a bloviating, work-shy fraud — and his long-suffering wife Juno hold their crumbling family together as political violence, a phantom inheritance, and personal betrayals conspire to destroy them. Hitchcock largely subordinated his visual instincts to the power of O'Casey's dialogue and the stage-trained cast, making this his most theatrical film — and while he later dismissed it as "a photograph of a stage play," the performances are magnetic. Sara Allgood's Juno is a tower of weary, magnificent strength, and the film's final scenes achieve a devastating emotional power that owes everything to O'Casey's writing and nothing to directorial trickery. Not typical Hitchcock, but deeply affecting.
