Jack Conway, MGM, 1926, from Rida Johnson Young's play. William Haines as the cocky undergraduate, Jack Pickford, Mary Brian. Silent campus drama, about eighty-five minutes. Crew, a rivalry, a girl, a race that has to settle the character. Haines building the persona MGM would sell as the wisecracker who gets educated. Conway shooting the Charles as if it were already a backlot. The play's songs are gone; the crew race stays.
