Fritz Lang, Ufa, 1924, first of two. Siegfried forges a sword, kills a dragon built in a studio forest, bathes in the blood, and rides into the Burgundian court, where the politics are worse than the dragon. The sets make a myth look like a ground plan. The poem is medieval. The blocking is modern.
In one programme
The forest is a set with trees like columns and light that arrives as if it has been measured. The dragon is a full-size machine. Neither is here to be believed. Both are here to be looked at.
